Advice for 11+ Parents

  • Identify the topics or areas your child finds hardest and work on addressing them step by step.
  • Encourage your child to build strong knowledge of the necessary Maths topics.
  • Remember that 11+ papers can vary significantly between independent schools and grammar schools.
  • Most Maths papers are non-calculator tests, so mental arithmetic speed is important.
  • Students should practise showing their working, as most schools provide space or additional paper for this.
  • Competitive schools may include questions beyond the KS2 National Curriculum, so carefully selected advanced practice can be useful.
  • Research your target schools and check whether they provide sample papers, as these are valuable preparation tools.
  • Cover worded Maths and problem-solving questions thoroughly, as they make up a large part of many exams.
  • Develop your child’s logical thinking and reasoning skills alongside core calculation ability.
